What is an EMG (Electromyography) Test?

An EMG (Electromyography) test is an electrical examination that evaluates the activity of muscles and the nerves that control them. This test allows a neurologist to detect nerve damage, inflammation, or muscle weakness originating from peripheral nerves or the central nervous system.

The EMG examination has two main components:

  1. Nerve Conduction Study (NCS / NCT) – measures the speed of electrical signals in the nerves.
  2. Electromyography (EMG) – records the electrical activity of muscles using a fine, thin needle.

Other names for EMG tests include:

  • Electromyogram
  • NCT (Nerve Conduction Test)
  • Nerve and Muscle Test
  • Electrophysiological Neurological Examination

How is an EMG (Electromyography test) performed?

emgAn EMG test is performed by a specialist neurologist and typically takes 30–60 minutes. The procedure does not require any special preparation, and patients can return to their normal activities immediately after the test.

The EMG and Nerve Conduction Study (NCS / NCT) are considered very safe diagnostic procedures, although they can sometimes cause mild discomfort. During the test, two very fine needles (electrodes) are gently inserted into the muscles to measure their electrical activity. Some patients may feel tingling, mild pressure, or local pain during needle insertion or while contracting the muscle.

Despite this minor discomfort, EMG and NCS provide critical information for diagnosing nerve and muscle disorders such as neuropathy, myopathy, and carpal tunnel syndrome, helping neurologists plan effective treatment.

What is the difference between EMG and Nerve Conduction Study (NCS)?

An EMG (Electromyography) test measures the electrical activity of muscles, helping neurologists detect muscle weakness, nerve damage, or neuromuscular disorders. On the other hand, a Nerve Conduction Study (NCS / NCT) evaluates the speed and strength of electrical signals in the nerves, providing important information about nerve function.

In most cases, EMG and NCS are performed together to ensure a more accurate diagnosis of nerve and muscle conditions. Combining both tests allows neurologists to identify the source of numbness, tingling, muscle weakness, or other neurological symptoms more effectively.

Single Fiber EMG (SFEMG) – Advanced Electromyography Test

The Single Fiber EMG (SFEMG) is an advanced version of the standard EMG test, designed to diagnose neuromuscular disorders with extremely high precision. While a standard EMG measures the electrical activity of multiple muscle fibers simultaneously, the Single Fiber EMG focuses on individual muscle fibers, allowing neurologists to detect subtle disruptions in nerve-to-muscle communication that may not appear in a regular EMG.

When is a Single Fiber EMG Recommended?

This test is particularly useful in cases of suspected:

  • Myasthenia Gravis (MG)
  • Rare neuromuscular disorders
  • Unexplained muscle weakness

Advantages of Single Fiber EMG Over Standard EMG:

  • Higher Sensitivity: Detects early nerve dysfunction that standard EMG may miss.
  • Greater Diagnostic Accuracy: Helps differentiate between various neuromuscular conditions.
  • Muscle-Specific Focus: Provides precise evaluation of the selected muscle for more targeted diagnosis.

FAQ – EMG test, a helpful questions and answers.

A neurologist may recommend an EMG (Electromyography) test in cases of:

  • Numbness, tingling, or weakness in the limbs
  • Unexplained neurological pain
  • Suspected nerve or muscle disorders

No special preparation is required for an EMG. However, it is recommended to:

  • Wear comfortable clothing
  • Avoid applying oils, lotions, or creams on the skin on the day of the test

Yes, this is a private paid service. However, patients with insurance coverage may be eligible for full or partial reimbursement, depending on their policy.

If you are a foreign resident or have international insurance coverage, we can accept a Guaranty of Payment from your insurance company. This allows you to receive care without upfront payment, depending on your insurance policy.

For Israeli citizens with private health insurance, partial reimbursement may be available according to the terms of your policy and insurance  plan.

No, Medassist does not accept Form 17 (HMO Coverage) or public health fund coverage by Israeli Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) . All services are provided privately. Nevertheless, insured patients can seek reimbursement from their insurance company according to their policy terms.

EMG testing can be safely performed in patients with heart conditions or pacemakers, but it is important to inform the neurologist in advance. The testing protocol will be adjusted according to your health condition.

The EMG test is safe for both children and adults, with protocols adapted to the patient’s age and health condition

EMG and NCS are generally very safe, with minimal risks. Some patients may experience:

  • Mild pain or discomfort at the needle insertion site
  • Small bruises at the location of the electrode

In most cases, there is no need to stop medications before the test. However, consult your doctor regarding:

  • Blood-thinning medications
  • Certain neurological drugs

Your neurologist may recommend additional tests such as:

  • MRI or CT scans
  • Neurological blood tests

These tests can be performed before or after the EMG to provide a more comprehensive evaluation of nerves and muscles.

Many EMG tests are performed together with NCS (Nerve Conduction Study) to evaluate both muscle electrical activity and nerve conduction.

  1. Standard EMG – Measures general muscle and nerve activity.
  2. Single Fiber EMG (SFEMG) – Advanced test for neuromuscular disorders, e.g., Myasthenia Gravis.
  3. NCS (Nerve Conduction Study / NCT) – Measures nerve conduction speed and function.
  4. Stimulated EMG – Combines EMG with electrical stimulation for diagnostic purposes.
  5. Dynamic / Activity EMG – Evaluates muscle activity during movement or work.
  6. Intramuscular EMG – Needle EMG focusing on a specific muscle.

  7. Peripheral EMG – Assesses peripheral nerves and muscles.

  8. MG-Specific EMG – Single Fiber EMG for diagnosing Myasthenia Gravis.

    on a specific muscle.

Peripheral EMG – Assesses peripheral nerves and muscles.

The cost of an EMG test (including NCT – Nerve Conduction Studies) depends on:

  • Type of EMG test

  • Number of areas tested (e.g., two limbs or all four limbs)

  • Complexity of the procedure

Typical prices range between 1,900  and 3,000 ILS.

NOTE: For patients with international insurance, we can accept and honor your insurance’s Guaranty of Payment, allowing you to receive care without upfront payment.

An EMG or NCS can be performed without a referral, but having a doctor’s referral with a clear protocol helps the neurologist:

  • Focus the test on the correct area
  • Tailor the procedure to the patient’s medical condition
  • Ensure accurate and efficient diagnosis

For Israeli citizens with private health insurance, partial reimbursement may be available according to the terms of your insurance policy plan.

If you are a Foreign Resident and have International Health or Travel insurance, we can accept a Guaranty of Payment of your insurance company. This allows you to receive medical care without upfront payment, depending on your insurance policy.
