What is a CT Scan (Computed Tomography)?

A CT scan (Computed Tomography) is an advanced medical imaging test that allows doctors to examine and diagnose almost every part of the body – including the head, brain, internal organs, digestive system, kidneys, and urinary tract.

CT scans are especially useful for detecting traumatic injuries, lung diseases, vascular conditions, tumors, and other internal abnormalities.

During a CT scan, the body is scanned with X-ray beams, which are processed by a computer into hundreds of detailed cross-sectional images (slices). These images are then combined to create a complete and precise visualization of the body or the specific organ being examined.

This technology provides doctors with high-resolution images, enabling accurate diagnosis and effective treatment planning.

There are different types of CT scans, performed according to dozens of medical protocols, depending on the patient’s needs and health condition. Therefore, to schedule a CT scan, a referral from your treating physician is required.

In certain cases, the CT scan may include contrast material (gadolinium) to enhance the visibility of the organ being examined and improve diagnostic accuracy. The contrast agent can be administered in various ways, such as oral intake or intravenous injection, depending on the type of scan and the patient’s condition.

When is a CT Scan Performed?

A CT scan (Computed Tomography) provides high-resolution, 3D images of the body, allowing for accurate diagnosis in a short time and supporting quick, informed medical decisions.

CT scans are commonly used to evaluate a wide range of medical conditions, including:

  • Unexplained pain in the chest, abdomen, back, or neck
  • Suspected fractures or injuries to bones and joints
  • Detection of tumors or inflammatory processes in internal organs
  • Assessment of injuries after accidents or sports activities
  • Vascular or nervous system problems
  • Monitoring recovery after surgery or previous medical treatments

Each CT scan is performed following a precise medical protocol, tailored to the specific organ and clinical purpose.

How is a CT Scan Performed?

During a CT scan, the patient lies on a narrow examination table that either moves through a large circular scanner or is scanned by a machine that moves along its length. The scan uses X-ray beams to capture detailed images of the body.

The procedure usually takes 5–20 minutes, during which the technician provides instructions and asks the patient to remain still to ensure clear, sharp, and accurate images.
